BOYHOOD YEARS

Jackie was the eldest of six children. He was an extremely active child and 'mischief' was his middle name.

Whilst still at school, he worked to help support the family. He made money as a  newspaper boy

and he also sold chocolates at the Regal theatre.

Living in a 'White Australia' had its disadvantages

for Chinese of the time. As a Chinese doctor, Wong was not allowed to charge for his services.

He was forced to operate using an honour box.

Jackie's hobbies as a child were;

* Sea scouting at Pelican Point (see Blood On Borneo)

PATROL LEADER PELICAN POINT SEA SCOUTS 1949

* WA Junior Naturalist Club. This was a passion that saw him as an active committee member

   and later President during his childhood. His love of nature was a life-long affair that became

   one of his magnificent obsessions.

JACKIE AND RON LEISTER AT NORTH BEACH

* Modern Piano. In 1939 when WW2 was declared, the 14 year old formed his first dance band known as

   'Jack's White Coats'. Not long after this, his other band members joined the armed services. With special

   permission, the young Jackie was a regular pianist at various venues in Perth and entertained various visiting

   servicemen that were based in and out of Perth.

Pelican Point Sea Scout Troop had added responsibilities in that much of his spare time was utilised in ferrying

American crews to and from their Catalina flying boats that dressed the Swan River in large numbers.

And then of course, his evenings were taken up playing piano wherever the opportunity presented itself.

By the time he turned 16, he was employed as an office boy with Atwood Motors.

And then one day, totally out of the blue;

... a white feather...           'a symbol of cowardice'
